Creating Space To Rest

Summer is always a whirlwind in youth ministry. From summer kickoff to the last big hoorah, we try to make the most of every moment we have with students. So often we go from camp to VBS to mission trips, while still juggling weekly gatherings, small events, and all the other ways we invest in students throughout the summer.

By the end of it all, we are wiped out and somehow have to pull off that Back to School event.

The truth is, summer ministry is full of incredible moments. The opportunities to spend time with students and see God do amazing things in there lives are multiplied in these months. But if we aren’t careful, we will find ourselves running on empty. Rest doesn’t just happen; we have to be intentional about making space for it.

So how do we keep from burning out this summer? Here are a few practical ways to slow down and find moments of rest in the middle of a full schedule.

Schedule Time

Take a look at your calendar now and find a few days in June, July, and August to block off for yourself. Protect that time. Turn off notifications, unplug, and do something that has nothing to do with ministry.

Don’t make the mistake of waiting until your are exhausted to rest. Plan ahead and recharge before you hit empty.

Tip: Plan at least one day off right after a big event.

Lunch for One

Pick one day each week to have lunch alone. And don’t sit at your desk working while you eat. Get out of the office. Sit outside. Read something fun. FaceTime a family member or friend. Just enjoy an hour away from the responsibilities.

A small break can be a reset for the rest of your day.

Tip: Pick the same day each week, put it on the calendar, and protect that time.

Recruit Help

During those busy weeks leading up to an event, ask students to come help you prep. More hands really do make lighter work, and it creates another opportunity to invest in students while also helping you get home in time for dinner.

Students love being apart of what you are doing, give them that opportunity.

Tip: As you make your to-do list, mark tasks students can help with so you already have a plan when they arrive.

Take a Walk

When everything starts moving 90 miles an hour and the pressure feels overwhelming, step away from the task for 15 minutes. Walk around the church. Go grab a Coke or an ice cream. Get outside for a few minutes.

A short break can help you refocus and return with a clearer mind.

Tip: Grab a fellow team member and take them with you.

God has great things planned this summer as you invest in students. But don’t spend the entire summer running on fumes. Find ways to rest and recharge so you can be fully present, healthy, and ready to be used by God in every moment.
